Zero Friction enjoys hassle-free MacOS device management thanks to our Microsoft Intune setup

In order to provide energy suppliers with a modern solution for meter data processing and invoicing, Zero Friction has developed a simple and transparent SaaS platform. A secure foundation for their meter-to-cash platform

Zero Friction is an innovative software company that focuses on the collective heating and cooling market. Their solution? A simple SaaS platform that collects consumption data from digital energy meters to automatically generate invoices, process payments, and communicate transparently with consumers. But they wanted to offer more than just a user-friendly platform. Everything also had to meet the highest security standards

“With our billing software, we’re at the heart of the financial information of our customers”, says Yoni Nijs, CTO and co-founder of Zero Friction. “So, keeping that data safe is our highest priority.”With that specific goal in mind, they embarked on an ambitious journey to become ISO 27001:2022-certified, the international standard for information security. However, in order to meet the requirements in the field of Identity and Access Management (IAM), they needed additional support.

Managing MacOS devices with Microsoft Intune

“About a year ago, we decided to introduce MacOS computers into our organization, alongside our existing Windows devices”, explains Thomas Vervynck, Azure Architect at Zero Friction. “A lot of our colleagues were asking for this. And we've also noticed that it’s a major added value in recruitment to allow new colleagues to choose their own device”, Yoni adds. But a hybrid setup has significant consequences in terms of device management, of course.

Given that Zero Friction was already using Microsoft Intune to manage the applications and devices in their Windows ecosystem, it was the most logical choice for us to continue building on the same foundations for their MacOS endpoints.

A brand-new Intune setup for Windows and MacOS

To ensure that the design of their Intune environment would scale easily as their needs changed, we reviewed and reworked their existing configuration in the first phase. What that means specifically? We'll recap it for you:

  1. A thorough analysis of their settings and policies.
  2. The presentation of our Intune baseline for Windows and MacOS.
  3. The opportunity to make adjustments according to their needs.

After the discussions and with a clear plan in our pocket (which also passed a technical inspection by our colleagues), we went straight to work. To minimize the impact on Zero Friction, we selected pilot users to test the new baseline. And after a few minor tweaks here and there, our solution was ready for implementation. As usual, we went on-site to ensure that the cutover went smoothly.

The result? A cross-platform device management tool that offers a better overview and more control.

MacOS management without hassle

“The Intune implementation went exactly as we expected: a few minor hiccups here and there, but nothing we couldn't solve”, Thomas laughs. “Device management is always tricky, but thanks to Valerie's thorough preparations and the support on the day of the switch, everything went according to plan.”

And from our side it was also a productive collaboration. Thanks to the constructive feedback from Yoni and Thomas, we were able to successfully complete the project in little over a month. But the best of all: partly because of our new Intune setup, they’ve been able to secure the ISO 27001:2017 certificate. A major victory for the Friction Fighters.
