Introducing Cloud Apps: remote app streaming for Windows 365

Application virtualization is nothing new. With RemoteApp from Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), users have been able to stream remote applications to their personal devices for years. But from now on, you'll get to enjoy that same flexibility with Windows 365: enter Cloud Apps. Curious about the possibilities of this feature? Ready to discover how you can integrate it into your organization? Dieter Kempeneers, our VDI specialist, dives straight into it.

What is Windows 365 Cloud Apps?

With Cloud Apps, Microsoft introduces a fast and user-friendly remote app functionality to Windows 365. But what does that actually mean? Cloud Apps give your users quick access to individual applications without having to provide all of them with their own Cloud PC. You stream a specific app directly to your users' devices, without desktop elements like a taskbar.

Even though this kind of technology – better known as application virtualization software – has been around for quite some time, Cloud Apps offer their own unique perks. So, what do you get out of it? Let’s break it down for you.‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌

With Cloud Apps, you can give your team access to a specific application in the blink of an eye. You benefit from centralized management and your colleagues enjoy streamlined app delivery. Ideal for temporary workers or frontline employees.

Whether you have a lot of remote workers, limited access to certain software, or simply a need for cloud-delivered applications, with Cloud Apps you get a simple and flexible solution for a variety of scenarios.

Because your users no longer all need their own Cloud PC for their virtual applications, you are much less dependent on your existing infrastructure. This way, you can truly get the most out of your Windows 365 license. And scale much faster.

Cloud Apps vs. RemoteApp

So, what's the difference? While both solutions offer a nealy identical functionality, there's one big difference: the focus. With Windows 365 Cloud Apps, it's all about ease of use and quick scalability. For instance, you don't need in-depth knowledge of VDI infrastructure to get started. The downside? You have less control over what's going on behind the scenes.

With RemoteApp from Azure Virtual Desktop, the focus lies mainly on flexibility and customization. But to get the most out of it, you need a lot more VDI expertise. And if you don't have an AVD environment yet, there are lots of other steps you need to go through first.

In short: Cloud Apps is much more accessible for the general public. RemoteApp can be better tailored to your specifications.

How does it work?

Cloud Apps uses Frontline Shared Mode, the version of Windows 365 that's specifically designed to give multiple users access to a Cloud PC, but not simultaneously. The upside is that you can easily give temporary employees or external consultants access to certain applications.

But it also has its limitations. You can, for example, only configure Cloud Apps with a Frontline Shared license. The other subscription types are designed for personal access.

How do you get started?

To ensure you can jump straight into using Cloud Apps, we've created a comprehensive step-by-step plan. Ready to start experimenting with it?
