White and Yellow Cross of East Flanders switches to Microsoft Intune to manage their Android tablets

Home nursing involves a great deal of work. The White and Yellow Cross knows this better than anyone. So, to make their work a little more convenient, the healthcare workers have all the necessary medical records at hand through their tablets. However, this also creates certain challenges in terms of access management. Curious to learn how Maxime Guillemin, our Modern Workplace Expert, optimized the Intune setup for their Android devices?

Maximizing support for the healthcare workers

The White and Yellow Cross needs no lengthy introduction. As a provincially organized organization for home care and nursing, they travel all across Flanders to provide their patients with the right care at home. But there's also much more going on behind the scenes. Aside from the local teams of nurses and care workers, each province also has its own support services: from IT and administration to healthcare quality and mobility.

“As its IT department, we focus primarily on the technical support for the nursing teams”, says Korneel Traen, ICT Manager at The White and Yellow Cross of East Flanders. “For instance, every care worker has been equipped with an Android tablet and a digital application (EVD) that allows them to view and adjust their care planning and their patients’ medical data.” These tools make the home visits a lot more flexible and efficient, of course, but they also come with certain technical challenges.

Central management for devices and applications

The White and Yellow Cross develop their application entirely in-house. And, needless to say, they're doing so with a strong focus on data security, given that it contains a great deal of sensitive information. But they also wanted to thoroughly secure the devices that run the application. “It was very important for us to have a platform to manage our tablets from a central location”, says Korneel. “We were using MobiControl as our endpoint management tool. But it was about to make some major changes, which made it lose most of its appeal to us.”

Microsoft Intune for Android

Ultimately, they decided to switch to Microsoft Intune. And they had two very good reasons for that:

  • The Microsoft ecosystem

The White and Yellow Cross had already invested heavily in the Microsoft stack with E3 and F3 licenses. So, it was a logical choice for them to stay within the same ecosystem. Not only because of the integration possibilities, but also for license optimization.

  • One platform to manage it all

MobiControl had been doing a decent job for a long time. But to further streamline their endpoint management, Microsoft Intune was a better fit for The White and Yellow Cross. “It was time to pick a single platform that could do it all,” Korneel said.

To ensure a successful implementation, we first looked at the existing setup and how it could be optimized. “Maxime actually solved a lot of blocking issues straight away. And from there, we determined where we wanted to go”, says Korneel.

But there wasn't much time. Korneel's team had a clear deadline: “During the summer, we have a lot of student workers. And they all need a tablet too. So, our new Intune setup and the actual deployment needed to be completed by then.” Challenge accepted! Curious to know how we managed it? Here’s a quick summary.

First, we had to ensure that the Intune configuration was stable enough for deployment. Due to the short deadline, it was particularly important to get the fundamentals right. The rest could be optimized at a later stage. Thankfully, even without an extensive testing phase, we were able to lay a solid foundation.

The setup also involved some custom work. We had to push Intune to its limits in order to provide The White and Yellow Cross with a future-proof solution. It was challenging, but not impossible. “Now, it's a lot easier to manage our devices, much more efficient, and better integrated into our existing toolset”, says Korneel.

To ensure that the caregivers could start using the new tablets as quickly as possible, Matthias and Joran from our servicedesk assisted Korneel's team with the swaps. “Replacing more than 1,500 tablets in three months? That may not sound like much, but it's actually quite an impressive achievement”, Korneel laughs.

"A professional and pragmatic partner"

Despite the short deadline, everything went pretty smoothly. And Korneel is extremely grateful for that: “You provided us with a high-quality solution and skilled people to support us at very short notice. We know from past experience that changing devices like this can have a major impact. But this time, we hardly noticed a thing.”

With their new Intune environment, Korneel and his team can now manage their various endpoints not only more smoothly, but also more cost-effectively and with less fragmentation. And they're already starting to feel the difference: "Onboarding the student workers went a lot easier than in previous years. We're already reaping the benefits of being on a modern platform. You've all done an outstanding job."
