What is Microsoft Security Copilot?

Security Copilot is a smart AI assistant, designed to strengthen and accelerate your daily security operations. There are two versions available:

  • An embedded version in your favorite Microsoft security tools – ranging from Defender and Entra to Intune, Sentinel, and Purview.
  • A standalone version in the dedicated web portal for more in-depth research.

Instead of having to dig through hundreds of settings yourself, Security Copilot simply lets you ask questions in natural language. This way, it can help you analyze your environment and find information much faster.

Strengthen your security team with AI agents

With AI agents in Microsoft Security Copilot, you can take your SecOps even further. These specialized AI assistants allow you to fully automate routine tasks and specific management processes: from phishing alerting and vulnerability monitoring to data security and identity management. With the right AI agents, your security team will have more bandwidth to focus on more complex threats.

But which agents can you currently choose from? At the moment, Microsoft offers 5 different ones out-of-the-box:

  • Phishing Triage agent in Defender
  • Alert Triage agents in Purview
  • Conditional Access Optimization agent in Entra
  • Vulnerability Remediation agent in Intune
  • Threat Intelligence Briefing agent in Security Copilot

The power of AI in your favorite security tools

The most direct way to work with Security Copilot is through the built-in experience in the various Microsoft security tools. You can find Security Copilot behind almost every policy, app, or setting. This means you get contextual help exactly where you need it, resulting in three major benefits:

  • Quick insights

With a single click on the Copilot button you get a clear, concise summary. So, you no longer need to manually open all the settings of a complex policy to understand it.

  • Smart automation

Copilot can assess the impact of a new setting for you or warn you about potential conflicts. This allows you to work proactively and prevent problems before they arise.

  • Central data source

The information you need is immediately available within the context you're working in. You no longer need to know or search for the location of a particular setting or report.

Security Copilot in action – Hibernation setting

A smart AI assistant for cybersecurity sounds good in theory. But does it work just as well in practice? We'll show you how powerful this tool is with a clear example:

Let's say you want to create a policy to put devices into hibernation mode after a certain amount of time. Before you start building, go to the Security Copilot web portal to ask your question in natural language. So, simply write: “Is the hibernation setting already in use in any of our existing policies?” Copilot then scans your entire environment and gives you an answer within seconds, without any manual searching.

The setting is not yet included in one of your policies, you can get started in Intune itself. There, you can also use Copilot to analyze the impact of the new setting, for example. It will then warn you of a potential conflict with other settings or tell you when you need to reboot. But of course, it doesn't stop there. You can ask lots of questions:

  1. "Why is this specific device not registered successfully?"
  2. Provide an overview of the changes made to this policy in the last 30 days."
  3. What are the recommended configurations for BitLocker on corporate laptops?"

Important side note: Security Copilot is a useful assistant, but it’s by no means a replacement for your expertise. Microsoft clearly states that the results may not always be 100% accurate. So double-checking is still required!
