2025 was the year of Generative AI. Most companies are currently working very hard to integrate it into their daily operations and streamline specific processes. But what can we expect from 2026? 1. AI agents become full-fledged digital colleagues

The rise of AI agents was one of the hottest topics in the IT sector in 2025. It has caused a huge shift in the way we use AI. And in 2026, that trend will continue. But we're starting to see a shift in focus: from disparate AI tools to a truly integrated multi-agent ecosystem, in which different agents work together and communicate with each other to perform tasks. Thanks to their modular structure and smart coordination, they can handle more complex tasks and ensure better reasoning, planning, and execution within specific business processes.

A smoother experience and even more peace of mind: from now on, you'll work from a single interface, while the agents work together behind the scenes to support you.

2. A new core competence: context engineering

In 2025, it was all about prompt engineering. But in 2026, context engineering will be taking center stage. When companies switch to multi-agent systems, it will become even more important to provide large language models (LLM) with the right amount of information in order to give even higher-quality answers. After all, good prompts alone are not enough to achieve valuable results. Solid integration into the environment where your AI operates is also essential. “But doesn't AI understand everything automatically?” Don't count on it. Without context, even the smartest AI is completely lost.

The result?

Contextual data – like system instructions, tools, external data, message history, etcetera – and techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation and Model Context Protocol (MCP) will now play a major part in AI adoption.

3. Creating vanguards for your AI systems

To build a solid multi-agent ecosystem, your AI assistants need access to more and more tools, data, and platforms. This naturally makes it even more important to take the right security measures. Without sufficient control, you might be faced with data leaks, compliance issues, or other undesirable problems. In 2026, security frameworks like AgentOps will play a pivotal role in streamlining the management of AI systems, as well as incorporating clear data lineage and thorough compliance checks.

Additionally, companies will be able to further accelerate and streamline their security operations with Microsoft Security Copilot (and the associated agents).

4. The ultimate goal: becoming a Frontier Firm

The biggest challenge for 2026? Making AI solutions an integral part of your business operations. Tech giants such as Microsoft are encouraging organizations to become AI-native by augmenting their human workforce with digital AI colleagues. In such companies – also called Frontier Firms – AI systems move to the forefront, creating a whole new way of working: smarter, faster, and more productive.

The result?

Agents become your new digital colleagues in 2026 and make up hybrid teams: part human, part AI. Companies are actively searching for the right balance between both parts of their workforce to maximize productivity and efficiency.
