The smart port is digital and data-driven

Innovative technology is the driving force behind progress. And in the (maritime) logistics sector, that drive for digital transformation is clearly in its DNA: from advanced data solutions to smart cameras and cargo drones. Over the years, various companies in and around the Port of Antwerp-Bruges have already taken many steps to transform the historic port into a central hub for innovation. But what exactly does their digital future look like?

Integrated and observable (data) infrastructure

The logistics sector is undergoing a major evolution: partners and customers are collaborating more than ever before, creating a growing need for a shared digital ecosystem. Yet information is still often scattered across various TOS systems, internal tools, and spreadsheets. The result? Each team works with different datasets, problems typically go unnoticed for longer, and no one has a complete view of the situation.

This need for end-to-end visibility doesn’t just come from the various port operators themselves. Regulatory requirements, such as the Digital Product Passport (DPP), are also forcing the sector to gain deeper insight into the entire supply chain: from arrival to handling and delivery. As a result, the focus is shifting from data collection to data integration. By bringing together operational, logistical, and commercial information in a more transparent and standardized digital format, all parties involved gain a shared overview they can rely on. After all, when data from terminals, modes of transport, warehouses, customs systems, and partners is available to everyone in real time, visibility can finally take center stage in port operations.

A modern cloud and data infrastructure supports this integrated operation at scale. It also forms the foundation for an environment that enables visibility, interoperability, and data exchange across all parts of the chain.

Cybersecurity and compliance as the baseline

As systems and platforms within the port become increasingly integrated, the attack surface naturally expands significantly. Shared applications, sensor networks, and planning platforms constantly exchange data. And that greater integration increases the risk of cyber incidents. A targeted attack could therefore have enormous consequences for multiple port companies at once – in the worst-case scenario, the entire port could be paralyzed.

That is why cybersecurity and compliance are no longer separate projects, but fundamental prerequisites for business continuity and operational resilience. Logistics providers feel compelled to protect their IT and OT environments with ever-greater rigor against external threats while simultaneously ensuring smooth collaboration among the various links in the supply chain. And European legislation plays a key role in this. In addition to the countless initiatives surrounding data protection and digital governance, these regulations impose increasingly stringent requirements on organizations that manage critical digital infrastructure – organizations like us. And those high standards are something we take very seriously at Arxus. We have, for example, subjected all our employees to a thorough security certification process to ensure our continued cooperation with the port.

In short, cybersecurity in the logistics sector requires not only intensive management, but also ongoing investment and close coordination among the various parties involved.

For the maritime industry and its critical ports, protecting highly sensitive logistics and security information is important. This is why digital sovereignty is essential for them: it ensures that their valuable data is subject only to domestic and EU laws. Infusing AI and automation in complex logistical chains

It used to be something only pioneers ventured into, but today automation has become the new norm. A tight labor market, strict safety requirements, and an ever-increasing focus on efficiency are causing traditional processes to be replaced more and more often by autonomous systems: from remotely operated cranes to self-driving vehicles and automated garages.
